Motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians in Glenwood Springs should prepare for ongoing construction impacts, event-related traffic, and seasonal road closures throughout June as several major infrastructure projects continue across the city.
The latest Cone Zone update highlights ongoing work on Coach Miller Drive, 19th Street, the Highway 6 & 24 Shared Use Path, and upcoming improvements on Soccer Field Road, along with anticipated traffic impacts from the GoPro Mountain Games and Strawberry Days Festival.
GoPro Mountain Games Bring Increased Traffic
Visitors should expect increased pedestrian activity near the Glenwood Whitewater Park on June 5 and 6 as events associated with the 24th annual GoPro Mountain Games take place near the Midland Avenue and Devereux Road intersection.
Some Mountain Games activities have been relocated to the Whitewater Park area, creating additional foot traffic throughout the afternoon and evening hours.
Coach Miller Drive Remains Closed
One of the city's largest transportation projects remains underway, with Coach Miller Drive closed between Park Drive and Pitkin Avenue for the duration of construction.
Local business access remains open, and the Rio Grande Trail remains accessible. However, pedestrians are encouraged to avoid the active construction zone and stay off the roadway.
The project includes a complete reconstruction of Coach Miller Drive, new sidewalks, upgraded stormwater infrastructure, waterline replacement, additional fire hydrants, intersection improvements, trail parking upgrades, and changes to Glenwood Springs High School access points.
City officials expect the project to be completed during summer break, with the roadway reopening before students return to school in the fall.
19th Street Closure Continues Through Summer
Construction crews have begun major utility and roadway improvements on 19th Street.
The road is fully closed between Grand Avenue and Blake Avenue and is expected to remain closed through August.
The project includes:
- New sewer infrastructure
- Stormwater drainage improvements
- New curb and gutter installation
- Fresh asphalt paving
Businesses remain open, with access available via alternate routes. Drivers are encouraged to use Hyland Park Drive or 20th Street to navigate around the closure.
Parking lots between 19th Street and 20th Street remain accessible through 20th Street only.
Shared Use Path Project Near Completion
Work continues on the Highway 6 & 24 Shared Use Path between Donegan Road and Linden Street.
Motorists should anticipate periodic lane closures and traffic control at Traver Trail and Devereux Road intersections.
The path remains fully closed to pedestrians and cyclists between Donegan Road and Linden Street. Travelers should continue using alternate routes or Ride Glenwood transit services.
Crews have completed most of the new 10-foot-wide concrete pathway and are finishing waterline improvements. The project remains on schedule for completion in July.
Soccer Field Road Closure Begins June 10
Beginning June 10, the City of Glenwood Springs will start sidewalk, drainage, and roadway improvements on Soccer Field Road.
The project is expected to last approximately four weeks and will require a full closure between Highway 6 & 24 and Glenwood Springs Middle School.
Drivers should use Donegan Road as an alternate route.
Business access from Highway 6 & 24 will remain available throughout construction.
Weekly Event Closures on 7th Street
Residents should continue to expect recurring closures on 7th Street between Colorado Avenue and Cooper Avenue.
Closures include:
- Every Tuesday from 3 to 9 p.m. for Market on 7th
- Sunday, June 21, for the Strawberry Shortcut Race
Strawberry Days Festival Approaching
Preparations are underway for Glenwood Springs' annual Strawberry Days celebration.
Two Rivers Park will close beginning June 17 to allow festival setup. While the park itself will be unavailable, pedestrian access along the river path will remain open.

Glenwood Canyon Construction Continues
Drivers traveling Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon should continue planning for delays throughout the summer construction season.
CDOT crews are performing bridge joint replacements and guardrail improvements along the 17-mile stretch between Glenwood Springs and Dotsero.
Current traffic impacts include:
- Single-lane westbound traffic between Bair Ranch and Hanging Lake
- Single-lane eastbound traffic between Shoshone and Hanging Lake
- Reduced 35 mph speed limit through work zones
- 11-foot width restrictions for commercial and recreational vehicles

The Glenwood Canyon Recreation Path remains fully open between Glenwood Springs and Dotsero.
Private Development Projects Continue
Construction is also underway on several private developments across the city.
Silver Sage Development
Work continues on a 40-unit duplex project near Four Mile Road and Airport Road. Some units are expected to be completed later this year.
Home2 Suites by Hilton
Construction has begun on a new 150-room extended-stay hotel in Glenwood Meadows. The project includes a landscaped parking area and public garden and is expected to continue through 2026 and into 2027.
Stay Connected During Emergencies
City and county officials encourage residents to verify their emergency notification information before wildfire season and summer storm season intensify.
Garfield County residents can sign up for emergency alerts through GarCo911, while City of Glenwood Springs alerts are available through the city's notification system.
Officials remind residents to slow down in work zones, follow posted detours, and allow extra travel time as construction activity increases throughout the summer.
