The single most common way a well-planned trip out here goes wrong is arriving on the day a place is shut. Small towns close on days that surprise visitors, and Monday and Tuesday are the usual suspects.

Below is only what we could verify from the business or agency directly. That is a deliberately short list, and the shortness is itself the point: you cannot assume a place is open, and you cannot assume it is closed either. Call.

Verified closed

The Hot Tomato, Fruita — closed Sunday and Monday

Open Tuesday through Saturday, 11am to 9pm. This is the town's post-ride institution and the closure catches out more visitors than anything else in Fruita. If your trip is a weekend, that means Sunday dinner is somewhere else.

Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park — closed Tuesdays this fall

The operator's own calendar shows the park closed on September 8, 15, 22 and 29. Otherwise weekdays roughly 10am to 5pm, Saturdays to 6pm, Sundays 9am to 6pm. The gondola ticket window closes thirty minutes before the park does, and the gondola is the only way in. Winter hours were not published at the time of writing.

Azura Cellars, Paonia — closed Tuesdays

Open 11am to 6pm daily except Tuesday, through November 1.

Western Colorado Botanical Gardens, Grand Junction — closed Sundays

Monday and Tuesday 9am to 4pm, Wednesday through Saturday 9am to 7pm.

Museum of the West, Grand Junction — closed Sunday and Monday

Tuesday through Saturday, 10am to 4pm, with tower entry closing at 3:30. Free admission on the first Friday of most months.

Verified open seven days

Worth printing, because it tells you where to fall back to.

Three seasonal patterns that behave like closures

The North Fork Valley shuts on November 1. Nearly every winery and cidery in Paonia and Hotchkiss ends its season on or about that date. Several also run limited days: Clear Fork Cider is Saturdays 2 to 5pm only; The Storm Cellar is Thursday to Sunday; 5680 Vineyards is Friday to Sunday.

Farmers markets end in October. Palisade's Sunday market at Third and Main runs 9am to 1pm and finishes the first Sunday in October. Fruita's Saturday market at the Civic Center runs 8:30am to noon through October 31.

Visitor centers close before the roads do. The Grand Mesa Visitor Center closes for the season on the last Sunday in September. Saddlehorn Visitor Center at Colorado National Monument drops from 5pm to 4pm after September and closes Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

Things that close for the winter

  • Box Cañon Falls, Ouray — closed November through March.
  • Black Canyon North Rim Road — closed to vehicles mid-November to May, unplowed.
  • Black Canyon South Rim Road — closes beyond the visitor center in winter; the rest becomes ski and snowshoe terrain.
  • Saddlehorn Campground — Loop C closes early October, Loop A on October 15, Loop B stays open year-round.
  • The Palisade Plunge — closed December 1 through May 1.
  • Lands End Road on the Grand Mesa — closed to motorized and mechanized travel December 1 through May 1, though hiking and horseback are still permitted.
  • Showers and laundry at James M. Robb State Park, Fruita section — summer facilities only.
