I-70 daytime lane closures hit Grand Junction next week
I-70 between Horizon Drive and Clifton runs one lane each way from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, Fourth Street downtown is closed through Nov. 20, COtrip lists Hanging Lake Tunnel lane closures through Nov. 6, and 6000 Road north of Banner Road in Montrose County is closed by flooding.
I-70 between Horizon Drive and Clifton drops to one lane each way from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, downtown Grand Junction's Fourth Street closure now runs to Nov. 20, COtrip lists more westbound lane closures at the Hanging Lake Tunnel Nov. 2 to 6, and flooding has closed 6000 Road north of Banner Road in Montrose County. Here's what's under construction in Mesa, Garfield and Montrose counties this weekend and the week of Nov. 2.
The change most drivers will feel is on I-70. The Horizon Drive to Clifton paving job, which has worked nights since August, shows up on COtrip Friday morning as daytime work: the right lane closed in both directions between mile points 31 and 37 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, Nov. 2 to 6, with a 12-foot width limit and delays of up to 15 minutes.
Downtown, Fourth Street has been closed between Ute and Pitkin avenues since Monday, and COtrip now lists the full closure through Nov. 20, with the single lane restrictions on Ute, Pitkin and Fifth Street running through Nov. 8. Last week the city gave no reopening date.
In Glenwood Canyon, CDOT scheduled the Hanging Lake Tunnel door repair to finish by the end of October, and COtrip now lists westbound lane closures at the tunnel for tunnel maintenance Monday through Friday, Nov. 2 to 6, so plan for slow going heading west. I-70 eastbound also has a new right lane closure near Loma through Tuesday, and in Montrose County, 6000 Road is closed north of Banner Road after last week's flooding.
Everything below comes from the city, county or state agency running the job, current as of Friday morning, Oct. 30, when we also read COtrip for state highway closures.
Road work across Mesa, Garfield and Montrose counties this weekend and the week of Nov. 2. Highway lines approximate.
Grand Junction
Downtown: Fourth Street closed through Nov. 20
Fourth Street is closed between Ute and Pitkin avenues for CDOT's rebuild, with Third and Fifth streets as the alternates and business access through the alley on Third Street, according to the city's weekly traffic update posted Friday. COtrip, updated Thursday, lists the full closure through Nov. 20. Ute and Pitkin stay at a single lane between Third and Sixth streets, Fifth Street is one lane between South and Colorado avenues, and large vehicles cannot turn right from Ute onto Fifth; COtrip lists those restrictions through Nov. 8. CDOT's project page expects work into February 2027, with a 10-foot width limit and 25 mph. The project line is 970-880-0688.
Four Canyons Parkway
Four Canyons Parkway is open from F½ Road to Flat Top Lane, one lane each way, and northbound 25 Road is closed between Flat Top Lane and F¼ Road, the city says. Its project page lists the next step: paving between Patterson Road and Flat Top Lane starts Nov. 16 and should take about a week.
Around town
Crosby Avenue stays closed between West Main Street and American Way, local access only; the project page said through October, and no new date is posted.
Main Street's holiday light installation keeps full block closures moving east from the 200 and 300 blocks for about three weeks from Oct. 23.
D½ Road stays closed between 29 and 30 roads, local traffic only; reach San Juan Street on 29½ Road from D Road.
Westbound Patterson Road keeps its lane shift from Pheasant Trail Court through Beechwood Street.
In the Redlands, Alcove Drive stays closed at 23 Road, and South Broadway is one lane at South Camp Road during working hours.
The 12th Street entrance to Stocker Stadium is listed as closed again Monday through Wednesday. Use Gunnison Avenue.
The city's Friday update carries the same list as last week's; nothing dropped off.
Mesa County
I-70 near Loma: right lane closed through Tuesday
Eastbound I-70 has the right lane closed between Exit 11 (US 6) and Exit 15 (CO 139 at Loma), mile points 13.4 to 13.8, from Thursday, Oct. 29, through Tuesday, Nov. 3, at 5:30 p.m., per COtrip, which ties the work to CDOT's statewide weigh-in scales project. This one is new this week.
I-70 Horizon Drive to Clifton: daytime lane closures all week
COtrip, updated Friday at 10:46 a.m., lists the right lane closed in both directions between Horizon Drive and Clifton, mile points 31 to 37, for paving from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. each day Monday through Friday, Nov. 2 to 6, with a 12-foot width limit, a reduced speed limit and delays of up to 15 minutes. That is a switch from the night shifts this job has run since August; Thursday night's listing still had the 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. hours and staggered ramp closures at Clifton (Exit 37). CDOT's resurfacing page still describes night work Sunday night through Friday morning through November, and CDOT had posted nothing explaining the daytime hours as of Friday morning. The project line is 970-639-0680.
US 6 east of Fruita: flaggers Friday night
US 6 runs one lane at a time with flaggers between mile points 20 and 22.5, west of 19 Road, Friday night, Oct. 30, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., per COtrip. Nothing was posted for next week as of Friday morning; CDOT's project page has night work Sunday night through Friday morning into November.
Palisade and county roads
The US 6 roundabout at Elberta Avenue is in its final phase, with Rupp Avenue closed at US 6 and Elberta closed at the south frontage road, and CDOT's project page still says late 2026. 32½ Road stays closed between E Road and E½ Road in Clifton, local access only, until summer 2027, per Mesa County (contractor line 970-644-6560), and Orchard Avenue work at 31 Road runs through late December, per the county.
Garfield County
Glenwood Canyon
Westbound I-70 at the Hanging Lake Tunnel has a lane closure Friday, Oct. 30, from 7 a.m. to noon, and COtrip now lists the westbound right lane closed between mile points 126 and 125 for tunnel maintenance Monday through Thursday, Nov. 2 to 5, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday, Nov. 6, from 7 a.m. to noon. CDOT's Oct. 12 advisory scheduled the emergency door repair for completion by the end of October and warned of holds of up to 10 minutes before the tunnel; CDOT had not posted anything as of Friday morning saying whether the repair runs past October. The hotline is 970-661-3086.
The bridge joint project has no closures listed on COtrip for this week or next.
Farther east, CO 82 over Independence Pass closes at 8 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, between Lincoln Creek Road and Graham Gulch for a storm safety closure, per CDOT's Oct. 29 release, which sends Aspen traffic from the east through Glenwood Springs. CDOT will decide after the storms whether to reopen or start the winter shutdown.
Glenwood Springs
19th Street stays closed between Grand and Blake avenues into November, per the city's construction update, last revised Oct. 19. Use Hyland Park Drive or 20th Street; Mindi Harman takes questions at 970-456-2563.
Rifle
Whiteriver Avenue stays closed between East Ninth and East 16th streets while crews install guardrail and stripe the new road, the city said Monday. Use Railroad Avenue or the Highway 13 bypass.
Megan Avenue's northbound lane between Airport Road and Last Chance Drive was closed for about four weeks starting Oct. 5, per the city; no reopening notice is posted. Northbound traffic uses Garden Lane.
Xcel's gas work keeps rotating closures on Railroad Avenue between East 10th and East 16th streets until the job is done, per the city. Questions go to 970-665-6577.
Done: Rifle reopened the eastbound lane of East 16th Street at Whiteriver on Oct. 23. Off the list: Glenwood Springs listed Mel Rey Road's lane closures for the week of Oct. 19 only. Garfield County Road and Bridge has no closures posted.
Montrose County
6000 Road closed by flooding
6000 Road is closed north of Banner Road because high water damaged the shoulders, Montrose County said Oct. 23. Crews will inspect once the water recedes; no reopening date is posted.
Ida Road and Lasalle Road
Ida Road west of 6400 Road stays closed for the county's box culvert replacement, which started Oct. 12 and was expected to last about six weeks, per the county; Rich Rivera (970-252-7009) takes questions. The county said in September that the Lasalle Road bridge just west of Highway 50 would run single lane with flaggers from Sept. 28 for guardrail work, with no end date, and has posted no update since. The city of Montrose has posted no new street closures since Sept. 25.
Heading south
US 550 over Red Mountain Pass is no longer listed as closed on COtrip. CDOT's Oct. 25 flood update said the pass reopened Oct. 23 with one lane of alternating traffic at a signal and more work in the coming weeks.
Done: the county's West End notice says Y11 Road reopened Oct. 26 and GG Road (GG25) reopened Oct. 27 after the flooding.
Looking ahead
No additional short term closures for the week of Nov. 9 appeared in the COtrip listings we reviewed Friday morning; the Hanging Lake Tunnel listings stop at Nov. 6, and the Fourth Street closure runs through that week. Four Canyons Parkway paving starts Nov. 16, and the city of Montrose's Sept. 25 notice anticipated patching closures on Cobble Drive and 6450 Road around mid-November. The rest of the long jobs above run into November or beyond.
