Road construction alert: US 6 closed in Palisade, Ida Road closes Monday
Four Canyons Parkway is set to open, Patterson and 25 Road lose their signal two Saturdays in a row, and Glenwood Canyon has tunnel holds through Oct. 31. Here's what's under construction in Mesa, Garfield and Montrose counties this weekend and the week of Oct. 12.
If your weekend plans take you west through Palisade, build in a few extra minutes. Westbound US 6 is closed between Peach and Elberta avenues while CDOT makes an emergency repair at the new roundabout, and the closure runs through Sunday night.
That's the one surprise this week. The rest is a mix of good news and patience. Grand Junction plans to open the first stretch of Four Canyons Parkway today. Saturday, the signal at Patterson and 25 Road goes dark for most of the day, and it does it again the following Saturday. Montrose County closes Ida Road on Monday for about six weeks. And anyone heading east on I-70 this month should expect to wait at the Hanging Lake Tunnel on the way back.
Everything below comes from the city, county or state agency running the job, current as of Friday morning, Oct. 9, when we also checked COtrip for state highway closures. Those change daily, so take a look at COtrip or call 511 before you head out.
Grand Junction
Four Canyons Parkway opens, and Patterson gets two rough Saturdays
The city has been building Four Canyons Parkway since 2024, and the piece between F½ Road and Flat Top Lane is targeted to open to traffic today, according to the city's project page. It's one lane in each direction for now, with access at Blichmann Avenue, F¼ Road and Flat Top Lane. It's the first time drivers can use the parkway west of the new 25 Road intersection. South of Flat Top Lane, it's still a work zone.
The intersection at Patterson and 25 Road is where you'll feel it. On Saturday, Oct. 10, crews install the new signal tower, and on Saturday, Oct. 17, they hang the new mast arm, switch on the new signal and pull out the old one. Both days the lights are off from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Patterson and 25 Road each drop to one lane in each direction, flaggers run the intersection, and you can't turn left from westbound Patterson onto southbound 25 Road. If you can route around it on those two Saturdays, do.
Elsewhere on the project, F¼ Road is open to local traffic only, and 25 Road is two-way on gravel between Patterson and Flat Top Lane. The city expects the whole second phase, including the wider Patterson intersection, to wrap up by the end of the year.
Downtown is still a single-lane squeeze
CDOT's rebuild of Pitkin and Ute avenues between Third and Sixth streets has another few months to go, with completion expected in early 2027. Through at least Oct. 18, COtrip shows Ute and Pitkin each down to one lane through the work zone. Fourth Street is one lane between Colorado and Pitkin, and Fifth Street is one lane between South Avenue and Colorado. If you drive something big, note that a traffic shift on Ute means no right turns onto Fifth for large vehicles.
CDOT's project page says to expect a 10-foot width limit, 25 mph speeds and up to 10 extra minutes getting through. The project line is 970-880-0688.
Crosby Avenue is closed between West Main Street and American Way. Businesses are still reachable.
D½ Road is closed between 29 and 30 roads, local traffic only. San Juan Street is also cut off at D½, so come in from D Road on 29½ Road.
Westlake Park's parking lot is still closed for maintenance through mid-October. The park itself is open; park on West Orchard Avenue or Poplar Drive.
The holiday lights go up on Main Street starting Monday. Expect full block closures, starting with the 200 and 300 blocks and moving east over about three weeks.
Redlands
At the new roundabout going in at 23 Road and Broadway, Alcove Drive is closed at 23 Road until the project's done. Use Vista Grande Road or Columbine Drive instead. Broadway itself stays two-way at 35 mph through the work. A little farther out, South Broadway is down to one lane at South Camp Road for the Redlands 360 work, with flaggers taking turns letting traffic through.
Mesa County
Palisade
Here's the weekend's headline closure in full. Westbound US 6 (Front Street) has been closed between Peach and Elberta avenues since Monday for an emergency repair at the roundabout, and COtrip shows it lasting until 11:59 p.m. Sunday. The listing doesn't include a detour.
The roundabout itself is close to done. CDOT is on the last round of concrete, paving, striping and the pedestrian crossing and expects to finish by late fall. Until then, Rupp Avenue stays closed at US 6, so if you're leaving Rupp, head south to Fairhaven Drive. Elberta is closed at the south frontage road (G Road). The bike and pedestrian path between Elberta and Vineyard Avenue is closed too, with a signed detour, and flaggers will walk you through the work zone at set times listed on the project page. Questions go to 970-765-7160.
Night paving on I-70 and US 6
Two resurfacing jobs keep crews out after dark through November, both working Sunday night through Friday morning, 7 p.m. to 7 a.m.
On I-70 between Horizon Drive and Clifton, expect single-lane closures, a 12-foot width limit, 55 mph speeds and delays of up to 15 minutes, according to the project page. On US 6 east of Fruita, between mile points 20 and 26, expect flaggers and one direction of traffic at a time, per CDOT.
Orchard Avenue
Mesa County's safety project on Orchard Avenue, which includes a new roundabout at 31 Road and work at the Lewis Wash crossing, is expected to run through late December, with landscaping finishing in the spring, according to the county's announcement. The announcement doesn't list specific closures, so if you're unsure about getting through, call the project line at 970-549-2468.
Done
The CO 340 repaving between Grand Avenue and Redlands Parkway is finished.
Garfield County
Glenwood Canyon
The canyon has two jobs going at once this month, and they stack up on the westbound side.
Through Oct. 31, CDOT is making emergency repairs at the Hanging Lake Tunnel, near mile points 125 and 126. Westbound drivers should expect single-lane and shoulder closures and holds of up to 10 minutes before the tunnel. Crews work Monday through Thursday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays until noon, according to the City of Glenwood Springs' construction update. The hotline is 970-661-3086.
The bridge joint replacements between Glenwood Springs and Dotsero are still going, too. As of Friday morning, COtrip showed eastbound down to one lane between mile points 127 and 128 and westbound down to one lane between 125 and 126, with 35 mph speeds on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. COtrip also lists an 11-foot width limit for commercial and recreational vehicles, around the clock until the project ends. CDOT's project page says the work should wrap up this fall, or pause for winter if the weather turns first.
Glenwood Springs
19th Street is closed between Grand and Blake avenues through the end of October while crews replace sewer and storm drains and repave. Use Hyland Park Drive or 20th Street.
The 9th and Cooper parking garage has its upper level back, and the city expects the lower level to reopen Saturday, Oct. 10.
The Highway 6 and 24 path between Donegan Road and Linden Street is nearly finished but still fully closed to walkers and bikes. The westbound Ride Glenwood stop at Traver Trail has moved to the crossing at West First Street, in front of the Antlers Hotel.
Rifle
The northbound lane of Megan Avenue between Airport Road and Last Chance Drive closed Monday, Oct. 5, for about four weeks while crews run utilities to the Grand River Health expansion. Northbound drivers detour onto Garden Lane, according to the city.
Xcel Energy is installing new gas service, which means rotating closures on Railroad Avenue between East 10th and East 16th streets and work on East 10th, 11th and 12th and West 12th and 14th streets, the city says. Questions go to 970-665-6577.
Montrose County
Ida Road closes Monday
Starting Monday, Oct. 12, Montrose County Public Works will close Ida Road west of 6400 Road for about six weeks to swap an old culvert for a larger box culvert, according to the City of Montrose. Follow the posted detour. Rich Rivera (970-252-7009) and Mike Hindson (970-964-2448) can answer questions.
San Juan Avenue and Highway 50
The city's sewer main work runs from San Juan Avenue at 6530 Road south and east to Main Street and Hillcrest Drive. At least one lane stays open in each direction, apart from a few overnight closures for tie-ins. Crews will pause for winter from roughly November to March and finish in summer 2027, according to the city. Civil Engineer Ryan Cushenan takes questions at 970-240-1485.
Cobble Drive and 6450 Road
Utility work for the Hub apartments has 6450 Road closed between Sanctuary Drive and Cobble Drive into mid-October, with access to Cobble Creek kept open the whole time. Expect one more round of closures, one road at a time, around mid-November for permanent paving, per the city.
