Grand Junction will break ground Aug. 17 on the Salt Flats development, a 450-home mixed-income community that will provide affordable apartments and for-sale homes for working families, seniors, veterans and first-time homebuyers.
Grand Junction will officially launch construction on one of the city's largest housing developments later this month as community leaders gather to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Salt Flats project.
The public ceremony is scheduled for Monday, Aug. 17, at 10 a.m. at the project site, 450 28 Road, marking the start of a multi-phase development expected to bring approximately 450 affordable and attainable homes to the community.
City officials say the 21.78-acre development represents a major investment in addressing housing needs across the Grand Valley by creating a mix of apartments and for-sale homes designed for a wide range of residents, including working families, seniors, veterans, retirees and first-time homebuyers.
Salt Flats is being developed through a partnership that includes the City of Grand Junction, Grand Junction Housing Authority, Brikwell, Rural Homes, Volunteers of America with MGL Partners, and Vertikal.
When complete, the neighborhood will offer a combination of rental and homeownership opportunities intended to increase the supply of affordable and attainable housing while supporting the city's long-term housing strategy.

Construction will begin with Juniper Grove, the first for-sale neighborhood within Salt Flats.
Developed by Rural Homes, Juniper Grove will feature 48 affordable homes available to income-qualified homebuyers, providing an opportunity for residents seeking attainable homeownership in the Grand Junction area.
Prospective buyers can learn more about Juniper Grove before construction begins during a Homebuyer Information Meeting on Saturday, Aug. 15, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Clifton Branch of the Mesa County Public Library.
The meeting will be offered in both English and Spanish to help reach a broad range of potential homeowners.
The Aug. 17 groundbreaking ceremony is open to the public, giving residents an opportunity to learn more about the project and celebrate the beginning of construction.
