Montrose County Expands Child Abuse Prevention Efforts with Free April Events
Montrose County is hosting free April events for Child Abuse Prevention Month, including kids activities, parenting resources, and movie screenings in Montrose and Naturita. The events aim to support families and raise awareness across the community.
Montrose County is inviting families across the region to take part in a series of free, family-friendly events this April in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month. The initiative is focused on raising awareness, strengthening support systems, and connecting families with resources that can help prevent child abuse and neglect.
The county will kick off its events on April 6 at 2 p.m. with a preschool-focused gathering at Hilltop, located at 540 S. 1st Street in Montrose. The event is designed for young children and their caregivers, with crafts and story time alongside practical support for parents. Families will have access to a Love & Logic parenting session, a fatherhood-focused discussion, and free car seat inspections. A diaper raffle and additional giveaways will also be available.
On April 10 at 3 p.m., Montrose County will host a free movie event at the Fox Theatre, located at 27 South Cascade Avenue. The screening will feature Super Mario Galaxy, with free popcorn and a drink provided. Seating is first come, first served, and families are encouraged to arrive early.
In an effort to expand access across the region, the county is also bringing programming to the West End for the first time this year. A free showing of Zootopia 2 will take place at 2 p.m. at the Old School Gymnasium, located at 141 West Main Street in Naturita. This addition ensures more families across Montrose County have the opportunity to participate and connect with local resources.
Local data highlights why these efforts matter. In 2025, 167 children in Montrose County were impacted by abuse or neglect. The county received 1,032 reports related to child welfare, with 246 cases assigned for investigation or addressed as Youth in Conflict. While many cases involved neglect, reports also included instances of physical and sexual abuse.
“Prevention of child abuse takes a village, and we are fortunate to have a strong one here in Montrose County,” said Keri Shelton, Program Manager for Child Welfare and Adult Protective Services. “Parenting is challenging and sometimes overwhelming. During Child Abuse Prevention Month, we want families to know they are not alone and that support is available.”
All events are free and open to the public. Community members are encouraged to attend, learn more about prevention efforts, and take part in building a stronger, more connected community for children and families across Montrose County.
