Montrose City Council says it is confident in the results of the 2026 municipal election while calling for changes to future election procedures, including clearer roles, formal election judge selection and a designated election-night gathering space.

In a statement released after community members raised questions about the election, all five council members said they had received information from city staff, reviewed the election process and had an opportunity to ask detailed questions.
“The City Council is confident in the accuracy of the final election results,” the statement said.
Council members also expressed support for City Clerk Lisa DelPiccolo’s administration of the election. Under the city charter, the clerk serves as Montrose’s chief election officer.
According to the council, the clerk administered the election “with rigorous neutrality” and worked to ensure a fair, unbiased and accurate outcome.
At the same time, the council said the city should make several changes before its next municipal election.
Among the areas identified for improvement are more clearly defined roles and responsibilities, city-specific agreements governing election administration and a formal process for selecting and appointing election judges.
The council also wants the city clerk to designate an official location on election night where all candidates would be invited to gather while awaiting results.
City staff are continuing to review Montrose’s election procedures and are expected to bring additional recommendations to the council.
The statement did not identify specific allegations or describe the questions raised by community members in detail. Instead, the city has published responses to election-related questions on a dedicated 2026 election process page.
The council emphasized that changes to municipal election policy ultimately fall under its authority.
“Conducting fair, transparent, and accurate elections is one of the most fundamental responsibilities of local government,” the council said.
The city’s statement effectively draws a distinction between the outcome of the 2026 election and the procedures surrounding it: council members say they accept the final results while acknowledging that parts of the election administration process should be clarified or formalized before voters return to the polls.
