The City of Montrose is asking residents to help shape a new piece of public art planned for a future roundabout at the intersection of East Oak Grove Road and Rio Grande Avenue.
City officials are gathering community input on the theme, style, and colors for a steel sculpture that could be installed in the center of the roundabout, which is scheduled for construction in 2026. The intersection will provide access to Montrose’s new Public Works Facility and is part of a broader effort to improve traffic flow and safety in the growing area.
The roundabout’s landscaping and design will complement the Public Works Facility planned just south of the intersection. The new facility is expected to be completed in summer 2027.
Montrose has increasingly incorporated steel sculptures and other public art into its roundabouts and public spaces. City leaders say the material provides a durable, low-maintenance option while helping establish a consistent visual identity across the community.
“There’s a lot of excitement around public art in Montrose right now, and we’ve received incredibly positive feedback from the community about the new murals and sculptures appearing around town,” said Michelle Wingfield, community initiatives manager for the City of Montrose. “Public art plays an important role in shaping our sense of place. It reflects the character and creativity of our community and helps foster a stronger sense of belonging for our residents.”
The intersection is expected to become an even more prominent location in the future. Plans call for extending Rio Grande Avenue south toward the Wolverine Drive area, creating an additional connection through a developing part of the city. When that extension is completed, the roundabout is expected to serve as a gateway into the corridor, making it a highly visible location for public art.
Residents are encouraged to share ideas for the sculpture through a short online survey. The survey will remain open through April 5, 2026.
The project will move through several phases over the next two years. City officials plan to select an artist in summer 2026 after reviewing community feedback. Construction of the roundabout itself is scheduled for fall 2026, with the sculpture expected to be installed in summer 2027 following completion of the Public Works Facility.
